A boat race, which each year raises tens of thousands of pounds for charity, is appealing for teams.

The sixth annual Dragon Boat Challenge, co-organised by Huddersfield Rotary Club, takes place at Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield, on July 12.

The race, also organised by Wakefield Chantry Rotary Club, last year raised over £30,000 for charities including the Edgerton-based Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The challenge, popular with corporate teams, pits dragon-styled boats of rowers against each other in a race across the lake.

This year’s event includes cash prizes for winning teams.

Special guests this year include double Paralympic skier Sean Rose, the mayors of Kirklees and Wakefield and rotary club districts governors.

Mr Rose, also a waterskier and supporter of Wings for Life spinal cord research charity, will be the cox for the Huddersfield Rotary Club boat.

Last year saw a record entry of nearly 500 rowers split into 26 teams, with 17 in a boat for each race. They took part in three races each over a 250yd course on the lake starting at 9.30 am and going on to the conclusion at 4.30pm.

The 26 teams were each sponsoring a different charity or worthy cause, with individual rowers collecting on behalf of the team and the money raised in 2013 brings the total raised by this event over the last five years to over £100,000 all going to local and national charities.

Huddersfield Rotary Club president, Margaret Fearnley, said: “It’s a fantastic day out.

“Everyone brings their own barbecues and gazebos.

“It’s an opportunity for you and your company to get involved and fundraise for your favourite charity.

“We do the organising. You get the sponsorship and come and enjoy the day and bring your supporters.”
