With the movie Cuban Fury set to ignite a new passion for salsa dance, a group in Huddersfield is already proving hot stuff.

What began as a university society has now opened its doors to anyone who wants to learn some fiery Latin American footwork.

The University of Huddersfield Salsa Society started out as a way for students to meet, have fun and work on their fitness.

But with the closure of the old Students’ Union building at the university, the society decided to step out of the halls.

Since the end of last year the group has met at the Revolution bar in Cross Church Street and has doubled its membership.

Now with the salsa dance comedy Cuban Fury – about a hapless former dancer who tries to win the heart of his salsa-loving boss – hitting the big screen the group is expecting another surge in interest.

Dance teacher Rashid Sarker said: “Cuban Fury is a feel-good movie which shows that anybody can dance and dancing is open to anyone regardless of their size or shape.

“People are attracted by the music, which is quite exotic, and the rhythm and the regular beat which means you can’t help but want to tap your foot or move to the music.

“Joining a group like ours is also a very sociable thing to do and it’s incredibly good for fitness.

“It is said that short bursts of activity followed by a break and another short burst of activity is the best way to lose weight.

“It’s also good exercise but the best part is it doesn’t feel like hard work because you are enjoying what you are doing.”

Rashid, a dentist from Halifax, has been dancing for 10 years. “Salsa was a revelation to me,” he said. “Once I heard the music I was desperate to dance.”

The group meets every Thursday with a beginners’ class at 7.30pm and intermediates at 8.30pm.
