GOOD causes in Huddersfield today received over £50,000 from the Big Lottery.

Two primary schools, two sports clubs, two ethnic minority community groups and a rural development group received £54,141 in the Lottery’s Awards For All grants this month.

Awards For All grants – £658,802 of which were handed out this month – are available to good causes and charities to help improve local facilities and involve their surrounding communities.

Paddock Cricket Club received £7,930 to expand its community sports programme.

The club will use the cash to buy archery and handball equipment and set up temporary changing rooms while its permanent changing facilities are being repaired.

It will also spend the money on administration and recruiting volunteers.

Hugh Golbourne, Paddock Cricket Club’s community engagement officer, said: “We’re looking to move towards becoming a multi-sports club in a community that’s in need of regeneration.

“It’s fantastic to receive the grant and we’re very excited. It’s remarkable how much use the grant will be.”

Fixby JI School gained £10,000 to create a community hub for pupils, parents and the community.

It will allow the school to provide new activities for the community and enable them to become involved in the running of the school.

Huddersfield Older Peoples’ Service (HOPS), which provides services for the town’s older African-Caribbean community, received £9,700.

The charity, which meets at Bradley Community Centre and the New Testament Church, Great Northern Street, will use the funding to train volunteers and improve the kitchen area.

Deighton Into Sport Project gained £8,620 to encourage young people to take part in sporting activities, organise discussion groups, offer mentoring and organise visits to places of interest.

The Marsden and Slaithwaite Renaissance received £8,100 to trial a Forest School programme for pre-schoolers.

Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance, Thornton Lodge, gained £4,530 for money management, IT and sewing workshops.

Big Lottery Yorkshire regional head Paul Jones said: “With the long hot summer lying ahead, what better time for local people to enjoy the great outdoors with their families and friends?

“A range of community groups across Yorkshire and the Humber are benefiting from funding today through the Awards for All programme for activities that give people of all ages the opportunity to get involved in outdoor activities.

“I’d like to wish everyone all the best for the projects they’re planning.”
