Detectives are today continuing to try to build a picture of what led to a man being shot in the head as he sat in a car in Huddersfield.

The team, led by Detective Chief Inspector Adrian Taylor, continue to investigate the attack in which the unnamed 31-year-old man was blasted by a masked man with a shotgun.

The victim is now under armed guard in a Yorkshire hospital following the attempted murder which occurred at 9.30pm on Tuesday night on Springwood Avenue, just off the Huddersfield ring road.

More details have emerged of the operation, which has so far seen two arrests.

A man has told the Examiner how armed police surrounded a Birkby house in the hours after the shocking incident.

Officers with guns and dogs burst into a house in Sufton Street at around 5am yesterday - around eight hours after the man was shot in the white Audi A3 convertible.

A resident of the street said: "I have never seen so many police cars.

"There were police officers with guns and some with dogs and they broke the door down.

"I saw them bring out a man a short time later.

"It was very frightening. This is a quiet road."

Police confirmed that the man detained in the raid was one of two arrested so far in the investigation.

Two men aged 35 and 24 are currently in custody in connection with the shooting.

Police also swooped on a block of flats in Brighouse yesterday.

Residents at Millroyd Mill off Huddersfield Road were initially told to stay in their apartments while armed police with dog teams searched the complex.

Yesterday DCI Taylor said: "“It appears that the victim was specifically targeted in what was an isolated incident and we are treating this as an attempted murder.

“We are continuing to establish the full circumstances and motivations behind this and I would appeal for anyone with information to contact us on the non-emergency number 101 number or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111”.

Det Chief Insp Taylor added: “I want to know if anyone remembers seeing a Mini or a VW Golf travelling at high speed in and around the centre of Huddersfield on Tuesday night.

“Likewise, I would urge people to get in touch if they saw or heard anything suspicious, or have any information that could further assist our investigations.

“Overnight we have conducted house-to-house enquiries within the immediate area, these enquiries will continue along with a detailed forensic examination of the scene.

“Neighbourhood Policing Team officers are also patrolling the area to speak to residents and offer any support they may require.”
