Police have today arrested two women in connection with the shooting in Springwood.

The women aged 31 and 34 were detained in the Birkby area on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They are being questioned by detectives investing the shooting of a 31-year-old Arfan Mehmood who is critically ill in hospital.

He was shot in the head by a masked gunman armed with a shotgun as he sat in a car on Springwood Avenue at 9.30pm on Tuesday night.

He was in a stationary white Audi A3 with other people when he was shot.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Earlier today a man accused of conspiracy to murder following the shooting appeared before Huddersfield Magistrates

Hamed Hussain, 24, of Clara Street, Hillhouse, was remanded into custody.

He will appear at Leeds Crown Court on March 28.

A 35-year-old man arrested earlier in the investigation has been released without charge.

Police sealed off a large area of Springwood for much of Wednesday after the shooting of Mr Mehmood.
