Pop hopeful Georgia Harrup is through to the next round of hit BBC singing show The Voice.

The Huddersfield singer appeared on prime time television on Saturday, vying for selection from the panel of celebrity judges.

And the 27-year-old Lepton lass breathed a sigh of relief after she was chosen by Welsh superstar Sir Tom Jones.

But her future career was on a knife-edge for a moment with Sir Tom picking her with just seconds to go of her minute long performance.

The BBC1 programme is currently at the ‘blind audition’ stage, which sees Sir Tom, and fellow pop stars Kylie Minogue, Ricky Wilson and will.i.am. listening with their backs to the performers.

If judges like what they hear they hit a button to spin round in their seats, progressing the pop wannabes to the knock-out stage in the process.

Georgia almost had to choose between Sir Tom and diminutive Australian legend Kylie Minogue after she moved to press her button but then pulled out at the last minute.

Georgia, who is a distant cousin of Grammy Award winning artist Adele, sang her version of Ray Charles’ Hallelujah, I Love Him So.

Sir Tom, who said he had performed with Ray Charles, praised her cover and welcomed her to ‘Team Tom’.

“I think you did a good job on that song,” he said.

“I love Ray Charles and you definitely did that song justice.”

Ricky Wilson told Georgia he had “no good reason” for not selecting her while Kylie admitted she was “so close” to turning round also.

Speaking at home yesterday, Georgia said she had been so wrapped up in the performance that she hadn’t noticed how close she came to missing out.

She said: “I didn’t really know he’d turned until I opened my eyes, then I realised he was looking at me and his light was on.

“I think I was caught up in the moment and just enjoying the performance.

“When I realised I just did this excited squeal.

“I didn’t have any expectations, I didn’t think I’d even get a turn, I just went along to see what would happen – and it happened.”

Georgia’s fiance, Craig Williams, who plays prop for Underbank Rangers, said the day had been nerve wracking for him too.

He said: “It was surreal. We were all waiting in the background and then all of a sudden you’re rushed into a room and you’re ready to go.

“The lights are on and the cameras are there and your emotions are really high.

“I was so nervous and then towards the end of the song I was thinking, oh no, no-one’s going to pick her and she’s going to be so upset.

“And then suddenly Tom turned and I was like ‘wow’.

“She’s done so well to get to that point from 50,000 odd people.”

Georgia said she was excited for the ‘battle round’ of the show, which should be aired some time in February, and said while she was related to chart topping superstar Adele, she hoped the public would back her for the right reasons.

She said: “To me it’s just a fact that she’s my cousin, I wouldn’t want to push for her to contact me or to help me.

“I want the public to like me for me and my voice and be a fan of me from what they see on television and not just because I’m Adele’s cousin.”
