It’s a phenomenal amount of artwork and the result of schools getting to know youngsters at a school for youngsters with severe and complex disabilities.

More than 1,000 pieces of artwork have been produced by students at Castle Hill School and six partner schools under the Newsome Pyramid.

The work produced under a project called Get Connected has now been unveiled in the new student gallery exhibition.

Pupils from the six Newsome pyramid schools were invited to the school yesterday to view the new exhibition and enjoy a final get together.

The artwork has been produced by pupils throughout the school year and included many collaborative displays on themes including monsters and creatures, animals and pirates.

Katrina Whale, Enrichment Activity Facility at Castle Hill has overseen the project and is delighted with how pupils have interacted and participated.

“This is the first time we have worked on an art project which integrates all the pyramid schools,” she said.

“Each class at Castle Hill has been paired with one or two pyramid schools which has allowed pupils to get to know each other and work together on projects.

“The pupils have really enjoyed the workshops which we launched last year after a live drawing performance from a professional artist.

“Our students have a range of control over their movements and worked on mark making, whether that be paint, pens and then that piece of work was moved on to another student to create different elements.

“Over the workshops around 1,000 pieces of art work were produced. We then photographed those pieces and created photo montages which have now been professionally framed and are displayed in our atrium to form a student gallery exhibition.

“Each framed work may include around 15 students work.”

The photos have also been reproduced in book form with each participating school presented with a copy.

The schools which form part of Newsome Pyramid include: Berry Brow Infant and Nursery School, Hillside Primary School, Netherton Infant School, Newsome High School, Newsome Junior School, South Crosland Junior School.
