STUDENTS from Huddersfield joined the second national day of action against higher education fees and cuts.

Around two dozen students from schools, colleges and universities staged a rally at Market Cross.

Student Sam Bell said the hike in tuition fees, dismantling of the Education Maintenance Allowance and cuts in teaching was fuelling anger across the board.

“Rising tuition fees and cuts in education will devastate the education system as we know it and pits the future of young people in jeopardy for generations to come,” he said.

The protest was supported by Kirklees Save Our Services, trade unionists, parents and teachers.

Students from Greenhead College, Crossley Heath School in Halifax and Huddersfield University joined the Huddersfield protest. Students from Huddersfield also travelled to Sheffield and Leeds as part of the national day of action.

Meanwhile young people will trek more than 30 miles to arrive at Nick Clegg MP’s Sheffield constituency HQ just ahead of the expected controversial Commons vote on higher education tuition fees.

The Young People’s March will start at St George’s Square, Huddersfield, at 9am on Saturday, December 11 and arrive in Sheffield by 3pm on Sunday. Hundreds more local activists are expected to join them outside Nick Clegg’s Constituency Office
