THEATRE school pupils are tuning up for a tribute to Amy Winehouse at the Royal Albert Hall.

The 12-strong team will sing on stage at the top London venue after winning a Classic FM competition.

All members of Oscar’s Theatre Academy, based in Fitzwilliam Street, Huddersfield, the singers will perform two songs on stage at the prestigious venue in November.

Paul Knutzen from Oscar’s said: “They are all really excited, they didn’t expect to get so far in the competition because they only formed nine months ago.

“But the judges were so impressed with them they were asked to sing a tribute to Amy Winehouse too.”

The group, dubbed Fitzwilliam Street, features boys and girls aged 14 to 18-years-old.

They are a Glee-style group and perform their own versions of classic songs and original songs too.

They entered the regional finals of competition along with 12,000 other theatre and stage groups.

They performed The Futureheads song The Hands of Love.

They followed it up with a mix of Gnarls Barkley Crazy and Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, which impressed judges.

They were among 300 selected to perform in Birmingham and from there they won the chance to perform on stage at the Royal Albert Hall.

Paul added: “They have been asked to prepare their own choice of song, but they will also do this tribute to Amy Winehouse, which is really something they’re excited about.

“None of them thought they’d get so far but wanted to give it a shot and they’ve done amazingly well.”

In the meantime the talented teens will prepare for a forthcoming show, Les Miserables, at St Paul’s Concert Hall on September 10 and 11.

They will then go into rehearsals for their big gig at the Royal Albert all.

“They haven’t decided what songs to do yet, but they’re working on it and are excitedly preparing,” Paul added.

“Many of them have never been to the Royal Albert Hall before so it’s a wonderful opportunity.”

Sam Horseman, head of music at Oscars, added: “They do their own arrangements as we’ve our own drummer and a few guitarists.

“We’re the only one to be asked to perform two songs and we’re working on it at the moment.

“They love modern music but they’re also working on a Beach Boys medley because it offers great vocal harmonies.”

Soul singer Amy tragically died on July 23. Her acclaimed as second album, Back to Black, last week become the best-selling album of the 21st Century in Britain.
