A teenager who crashed his car causing serious injury to his younger cousin has admitted dangerous driving.

The 15-year-old suffered kidney damage, broken ribs and a significant head wound in the smash in the Beaumont Park area.

His cousin, Daniel Hussain, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Hussain, 18 today, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving and willfully obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said that the incident happened on November 19 on Butternab Road.

Hussain, of Dryclough Road in Crosland Moor, was behind the wheel of a Suzuki Swift when it crashed into some property in the area.

Mrs Jones said: “He was driving too fast, the car went over a speed bump and he lost control.

“There were two other passengers in the back of the vehicle – one was a schoolboy.

“He suffered serious injuries, including kidney damage which he has not fully recovered from.

“He had three broken ribs and a significant head wound.”

Magistrates heard that one of the passengers was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Stephanie Pim, mitigating, said that her client had shown genuine remorse over the offences.

She told the court: “Not only was this offence serious, he seriously injured his younger cousin.

“He was in hospital for quite a while and will have medical problems for the foreseeable future.

“He’s also thrown away a career in cars.

“That was a keen interest of his and for the foreseeable future he will not have access to cars.”

Hussain, who has no previous convictions, will appear before a youth panel for sentencing on Monday.

Magistrates issued Hussain, currently studying for a BTEC in IT, with a driving ban in the interim.

Another teenager, 18-year-old Ahdil Hussain, appeared in court in connection with the offence.

He also faces charges of dangerous driving and obstructing a police constable.

In addition he is charged with failing to stop after a road accident, using a vehicle without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Magistrates committed his case to Leeds Crown Court, where he will first appear on January 13.
