Where hair was snipped, ice cream could soon be licked.

That’s because a new ice-cream parlour chain is hoping to open in the old Toni and Guy hairdressers in Huddersfield town centre.

Icestone Gelato has applied for permission to open a store on John William Street, next to Nando’s.

The firm, which offers a huge range of ‘gelato’ – Italian for ice-cream – and other desserts, launched in Bradford in 2013.

It has two stores in the town and one other in Birmingham.

But it is now growing rapidly and is set to open stores in Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.

A number of jobs are likely to be created if the Huddersfield plan goes ahead.

The Toni and Guy salon closed its doors in September after trading for more than 10 years on the John William Street site.

The ice-cream firm sells more than 26 different varieties of ice-cream, including Belgian chocolate, hazelnut, Jaffa cake, raspberry pavlova and blueberry muffin.

The outlets also offer Belgian waffles, crepes and a range of traditional puddings such as sticky toffee and jam roly-poly.

A spokesman for founder and CEO, Mahboob Hussein, said he was busy travelling the country looking for potential new stores.

The spokesman, said: “This will be a exciting business for Huddersfield.

“We know people travel from Huddersfield to Bradford already to experience our ice-cream.

“We hope and expect it to do very well.”

The firm’s flagship Bradford outlet operates until 1am and it is expected they will apply for similar opening hours in Huddersfield.

Official plans for the design of the Icestone Gelato store are expected to be lodged with Kirklees Council in the next few weeks.
