A Huddersfield Town fan has lodged an official complaint after he was refused entry to the club’s game at QPR on Saturday.

Grandad Chris Wood, 49, had a ticket but was denied admission because the gateman said he was drunk.

Chris, a Town season-ticket holder who has only missed three away games this season, said he had never been in trouble at a football game before.

He had drunk three pints of cider – and then run to the Loftus Road stadium because it was almost kick-off and he lost track of the time.

Self-employed roofer Chris, a heavy smoker, was gasping for breath when he reached the turnstiles.

When he tried to get in, the gateman turned him away, saying: “You’re inebriated.”

Chris, of Gomersal, near Cleckheaton, who has six children and three grandchildren, said: “I wasn’t drunk but I was bent over and out of breath.

“I have never been in trouble at a football match and I am not someone who goes to a match and gets so drunk I can’t enjoy it.

“Like all Town fans I love a bit of banter but all the away supporters agree that Town fans are brilliant on their travels.”

When he had caught his breath, Chris sought out other stewards and an official at the main entrance.

He said they agreed he didn’t seem drunk but they insisted there was nothing they could do if he had been refused entry.

“It all comes down to one man’s view and that’s not fair,” said Chris. “I am not a big drinker.”

Chris had spent £30 on a ticket and £25 on the coach with Batley Irish Democratic League Club in Batley.

“I am not going to spend that kind of money and go all the way to London only to go on the booze all day,” he said.

“I just want that man on the gate to apologise. It was out of order.”

A spokesman for QPR said: “The club are aware of Mr Wood’s complaint and the matter is currently under investigation.”
