Huddersfield Town fans are aiming to crank up the atmosphere at the John Smith’s Stadium next season.

A new ‘singing’ Home End will be introduced in the Fantastic Media lower stand.

And a new group, dubbed the North Stand Loyals, has launched a fundraising drive to buy specially-designed flags or banners.

The group, set up on fans’ website Down At The Mac, is holding a public meeting at the club’s Canalside base on Saturday (1pm) to promote the new Home End.

Group spokesman David Scholefield, 52, said the move was all about raising the volume, lifting the players and making football “like it used to be.”

David, of Roberttown, a fan for more than 40 years, said he wanted a return to the atmosphere of the fondly-remembered Cowshed at the old Leeds Road ground.

“Football used to be a working class game and we want to get back to that feeling and atmosphere,” he said.

“The Home End will be where like-minded football fans can sing and stand together, just like we did in the 1970s and 1980s.”

David said modern-day football had been made “clinical and medical” with allocated seats. Many fans had been priced out while others were happy to sit at home and watch TV.

The new Home End was successfully trialled at the FA Cup tie against Charlton and league games against Barnsley and Bolton towards the end of last season.

Around 250 fans braved driving wind and rain for the Charlton game but 850 turned out for the 5-0 trouncing of Barnsley when club officials and players alike were delighted by the atmosphere and volume of support.

David, who is on the All Together Town supporters’ panel, said the group wanted a large flag and banners to display on the Home End.

Ten designs had been drawn up and a vote was being held on Down At The Mac.

Favourite so far is You’ll Never Win 3 in a Row, a reference to Town becoming the first English club to win three successive championship titles in the 1920s.

David likes an image called A Certain Romance based on an Examiner photograph of fans celebrating in the Cowshed in 1979-80 – because he’s on there somewhere.

David has moved from the Britannia Rescue Stand to the new Home End and has cut his season ticket cost from £369 to £249 and hopes others will follow him.

His ultimate aim is to prove the demand and persuade the club to make the 4,000-capacity South Stand the home end.

A fans’ appeal has so far raised £1,100 for the new flags and banners.

The designs, a new name for the Home End, song choices and the possibility of a drummer or band will be discussed at the meeting. All are welcome.
