Huddersfield Town fans inconvenienced by bus route diversions on matchdays are being offered discounted tickets.

From Saturday – when Town host Leeds United – bus company Arriva Yorkshire will be offering journeys for just £1 each way.

Supporters must show their season card or match ticket to qualify for the price cut.

The full Leeds-Huddersfield fare is up to £3.10. Reduced fares will continue for the rest of the season.

This season Arriva has diverted buses away from the John Smith’s Stadium immediately before and after matches claiming traffic congestion has made services run late.

Buses that usually serve Leeds Road – the 202, 203, 220 and 229 – are re-routed along Deighton Road, Fartown Bar and Bradford Road.

Town fans, especially those from North Kirklees, were left fuming.

Now, after talks with Huddersfield Town Supporters’ Association (HTSA), Arriva has announced revised timetables and concessionary fares.

A new stop will also be introduced from Saturday at Willow Lane, near the Slubbers Arms, to allow fans to get off closer to the stadium.

For a 3pm kick-off the last ‘normal route’ bus arrives in Huddersfield Bus Station at 2.15pm and after the game the first bus to leave Huddersfield sets off at 5.15pm.

Nigel Featham, regional managing director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “It is important that we ensure a balance between running punctual services for our regular customers along the whole of the route and providing supporters with a means for getting to and from the stadium.”

Town fan and bus passenger Alan Hodgson, 59, of Birstall, said: “The reduced fare seems like a decent idea.

“It doesn’t alter the fact that some people will have more of a walk though.”

Stephen King, chairman of HTSA, welcomed the changes and said: “We hope to continue the dialogue with Arriva with a view to improving passenger services after the match as well as those before it.”

Diversions will also be in place for the England versus Ireland Rugby League World Cup game at the stadium on Saturday, November 2.

Fans showing match tickets will also be eligible for the £1 fares.

The diversions operate only on Saturdays.
