TOWN stopper Alex Smithies has backed a campaign for everyone to have hands as safe as his.

Along with his job of keeping clean sheets for Huddersfield Town, the Terriers’ goalkeeper has dived in to support the annual wash your hands campaign.

The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust campaign is aimed at highlighting the importance of keeping hands clean at all times.

Infection prevention and control nurses, Karen Tomlinson and Andrea Denton, are heading up the initiative to reduce the risk of infections within hospitals and families’ homes.

Karen said: “Washing hands is a simple and effective way of reducing infections yet it can sometimes be forgotten.

“Good hand hygiene is fundamental in preventing the spread both in health care environments and at home.

“Hand hygiene is everybody’s responsibility.’’

Alex said: “I am delighted to be backing the nurses in their efforts to spread the message about hand washing.

“A safe pair of hands is essential.”

The nurses’ advice is to always wash hands before and after preparing food, after handling raw meat, before eating food, after using the toilet and after contact with minor cuts and wounds.

Healthcare officials also recommend washing hands before entering a hospital, on entry and when leaving individual patient rooms.
