CHAMPIONSHIP watch out!

Those were the words of one Huddersfield Town fan who joined jubilant supporters across Huddersfield to celebrate the nerve-shredding penalty victory.

Fans who did not travel to Wembley to see the agonising League 1 Play Off Final descended to pubs and bars to get a piece of the action – and some stayed at home with roars all over Town when Sheffield United missed the final penalty sending them into football heaven.

Crowds gathered around midday near Kingsgate and managed to soak up the sunshine pre match before filing into many bars.

The Cotton Factory in King Street was one of the busiest on Saturday with several screens for supporters to get a glimpse of their beloved Terriers.

Eighteen-year-old pals Dan Massey, Liam Finch, Jake Taylor and Ashley Willcocks were some of those wearing Town shirts.

Season ticket holder Jake said: “I was going to go to Wembley but we looked at prices and it was just too expensive.

“My mum, Sally Peckett, has gone with some friends, so I was a bit gutted, but the atmosphere in Huddersfield will be good.”

And Jake added: “I’ve cried at two semi finals. It’s the best thing ever to be a Championship side.

“Town should be a top flight club. Championship watch out!”

Some of the youngest supporters wearing Town shirts were eight-year-old Jake Ling and six-year-old Josh who were enjoying an afternoon out with parents Caroline and John.

Meanwhile, in the Cotton Factory Shaun and Laura Hodgson were practically pinned to the bar as they watched the first half in the packed bar.

Shaun, wearing an Examiner ‘Come on Town banner’ said: “They’ve worked all season for this. I feel like they’ve done everything they could.”

Michael Kilner, 64, had travelled from Barnsley to have a good day out and soak up the atmosphere.

“I support Barnsley but I knew there would be a good crowd here,’’ he said.

But David Brennan, 52, from Sheepridge summed it up for a lot of fans when the victory was made as the Blades goalkeeper Steve Simonson missed the penalty. He said simply: “We are over the moon.”
