An anti-austerity rally is being staged in Huddersfield today.

Chancellor George Osborne will today announce the first solely tory budget in more than 20 year and is expected to be targeting tax credits, the in-work benefits that cost the country just shy of £30bn a year.

The Chancellor is expected to point to the plight of Greece to justify painful changes, warning that the “greatest mistake” would be to “think that all our problems are solved”.

Huddersfield Trades Union Council is hosting the ‘end austerity now’ rally in Market Place from 12.30.

Bob Stoker, Secretary, Hudds TUC, said: “This is the second budget in just four months.

“Osborne plans £12 billion in cuts to welfare ad fresh round of austerity measures.

“The government is making the poorest in our society pay for the crisis.

“We call on George Osborne not to take away tax credits before wages are enough for families to live on.

“We reject austerity as a solution to the economic crisis. Instead of cuts we support a plan for public investment and jobs that can get the economy growing.”
