ACCOUNTANCY students at Huddersfield University are testing out techniques to help them stay ahead of the pack in getting a job.
In difficult economic times, students are learning methods used by employers during the recruitment process.
These include psychometric tests – a set of quick fire questions which assess a person’s natural ability to perform in a certain skill area.
These tests are now used by more than 40% of all employers before choosing candidates for interview.
The students have been looking at the testing method as part of their BA Hons Accountancy and Finance degree.
Senior accountancy lecturer Kirsten Jones explained: “Graduate employment is increasingly competitive.
“By giving our students the chance to practice the kind of tests they will face when applying for a job, we are providing them with a better chance of success, thus making them more employable.”
They have been led in the tests by Sue Spence, of the university’s careers service.
She is approved by the British Psychological Society to conduct the tests and interpret the results and was able to provide valuable feedback to students about their performance.
