STAFF who have gone the extra mile to make the road smoother for students at the University of Huddersfield have scooped awards.

Now in their third year, the Extra Mile Awards were the brainchild of the Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund (TQEF) at Huddersfield.

TQEF Project Manager Lisa Ward said: “It was felt that members of staff that do back-room jobs were less likely to be nominated by students, so it was decided to introduce staff nominations as well.”

Ten members of staff were nominated by students and four by University staff for 2009 Extra Mile Awards.

First prize in the student nominated awards was shared between John English, a senior lecturer in the Business School, and Keith Hickling, acting head of psychology in the School of Human and Health Sciences.

There were joint first prizes too in the staff-nominated Extra Mile Award. It was shared by Andrea Croxford, a departmental administrator in the School of Music and Humanities, and Keith Mallinson, who is a technician for the School of Computing and Engineering.

A team award went to the Alpha Team of campus support officers – Allan Butters, Harry Cutts, Liz Cutts, Philip Dufton, Chris Garforth, Kevin Geary and Stan Greaves.

An award for outstanding contribution was presented to Janet Clowery, resource centre manager in the School of Applied Sciences.

She is the only member of staff to have been nominated in all three categories since the awards began.
