A man has been jailed for 18 months after he and an accomplice robbed a student who had given them some of his pizza.

Leeds Crown Court heard the victim Justin Boofer was walking home on the evening of October 15 after collecting the pizza and realised there were two men behind him.

In addition to being a student at Huddersfield University Mr Boofer worked part-time in Iceland and recognised one of the men Kyle Sweeting as having been in those premises.

Richard Walters prosecuting said the pair walked along with Mr Boofer who after being asked gave them a slice of the pizza but when they got to Headlands Road, Newsome, they tried to take his laptop bag which was over his shoulder.

During the struggle his phone dropped out and the other man picked it up and ran off before calling on Sweeting to follow.

Mr Walters said Sweeting did move away but when Mr Boofer asked for his phone back, he returned and punched him in the face causing him to fall in some bushes. He suffered a black eye as a result of the incident.

Charlotte Eastwood said Sweeting was a young man who had suffered traumatic experiences in his life which had led to an alcohol dependency.

He had been drinking that night and was remorseful for his behaviour.

Sweeting, 23, of Cornrace View, Newsome, Huddersfield, admitted robbery.

Sentencing him the Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC said Sweeting had a number of previous convictions and was on a community order at the time of the latest offence.

He accepted he had suffered a lot of pain inside him from events in his life which he had tried to resolve by drinking but told him “that is no solution.”
