Vets are battling to save another cat, thought to have been poisoned in Golcar.

Tucker, who is owned by Andrew Wilkinson, is thought to be the latest pet to have suffered antifreeze poisoning.

At least three cats have died in recent weeks after suffering apparent poisoning, and others have been taken ill..

All have been in a small area in the centre of Golcar and inquiries are under way to determine the source of the poisoning.

Cats are known to like the taste of antifreeze but it can be lethal to them, even if they lick only a small amount spilled on the road.

Mr Wilkinson lives in Springside Rise, only a couple of hundred yards away from the previous incidents in Moorcroft Avenue.

He said: “I have had Tucker for the past four years, adopting him as a stray.

“I came home to find him really poorly and took him straight to the vet.

“They believe he has been poisoned, possibly by antifreeze, and he is in a bad way.

The RSPCA have issued guidance for drivers and pet owners

“He cannot stand and they fear his liver and kidneys may have been damaged, and that it could also have reached his brain.

“It may be the cats have wandered into an empty garage where antifreeze has been spilled. It seems too mild yet for motorists to be putting it in their cars for the winter”

An RSPCA spokesman said: “Accidental poisonings from spills/leaks, as well as leaking water coolant from cars happen every year, leading to pet death.

“We would ask drivers to regularly check their car to ensure it isn’t leaking water coolant. Take care storing, using and disposing of anti-freeze and water coolant. Most accidental deaths are avoidable.

“Signs of anti-freeze poisoning can show 30 minutes after ingestion. It can be two/three days before signs of kidney failure are seen. The sooner your pet receives veterinary treatment, the better their chances of survival. If left untreated, anti-freeze poisoning can cause pain, suffering and distress and ultimately death”.
