The good news: Huddersfield is in for a week pf sunny, summery weather. The bad news: we're not getting a heatwave.

Examiner weather expert Paul Stevens has poured cold water on speculation that a heatwave is heading our way on Tuesday.

Last week there were suggestions that temperatures might reach as high as 90 degrees on Tuesday – followed by a thunderstorm – but the reality is likely to be far less dramatic.

Salendine Nook-based Mr Stevens says that we are unlikely to experience quite the heatwave we were expecting.

He said: “We are going to get increasing amounts of sunshine from Monday as high pressure builds up but the really hot weather will be pushed to Ireland and over the Atlantic leaving us with a pleasant period of summery weather.

“Temperatures over Monday are likely to hover between 21-22C and a little warmer perhaps on Tuesday but the good news is that it was going to break down on Tuesday but the good weather will now probably extend into Wednesday and Thursday before we get some rain developing across the UK on Friday.

“So the fine weather will last for a couple of days longer than we were envisaging with possible showery outbreaks on Thursday or Friday though it should still be warm enough.

“As for the weekend I expect there will be some sunshine around, reasonably warm but also with some showers.”

Although Yorkshire will be spared very hot weather other parts of the country are set to experience two very hot days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Alex Burkill, a meteorologist with the Met Office, said Britain would start to heat up on Monday and peak on Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures in the high 20s and breaking 30C in some places.

It will be hottest in the south and south-east of England, but will fall short of mid July’s record this year of 33.5C (92F), he said.
