Time may just about be up for the Indian summer which has given people an unexpected boost in recent days.

Weather forecasters are urging us to make the most of this weekend as next week promises a return to the more normal October pattern of wet and windy conditions across the region.

For several days high pressure has brought a foggy start followed by sunny, calm and pleasant days, with temperatures some four degrees above normal for the time of year.

But a breakdown in the weather pattern is likely on Sunday night, leading to unsettled conditions through next week.

Salendine Nook weather forecaster Paul Stevens said: “Apart from the pesky, foggy mornings we have had to put up with, we have had a very fine spell, and the weekend looks like it will be warm and dry and temperatures could go as high as 18°C or 19°C (66°F).

“But you need to make the most of it as we will then get into October proper with low pressure and lots of wind and rain.

“It could be very unsettled for several days and become quite chilly.”

There could be some better news ahead, though, with the following weekend possibly seeing a return to the dry, calm and warmer weather which has dominated of late.

But this all depends on the progress of Hurricane Joaquin in America.

The east coast of the US is braced for potential flooding and damage this weekend as the storm strengthens after battering the Bahamas.

And Paul said the fallout from the hurricane could dictate weather conditions in Britain in the days ahead.

“Keeping track of hurricanes can be difficult, but it’s possible it could lead to warm air taking hold in Britain by the weekend after next,” he said. “If so this could make things quite pleasant for us.”
