A short, sharp blast of winter is set to hit Huddersfield.

Temperatures could drop below freezing with sleet, snow and ice causing problems, but the Arctic feel will stay with us for only 48 hours.

After that it seems likely we will return to very mlld and wet conditions.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the Yorkshire region, because of snow and high winds.

There are also alerts out for other parts of the country, including Scotland, Wales and the North East.

Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens is also predicting wintry conditions from late on Friday, with the chance of a few centimetres of snow on the moors and high ground.

“The colder air we have talked about for over a week now is massing to the north of the UK but it will be here for 48 hours then the Atlantic takes over once again.

“After the weekend we see an Atlantic high developing, meaning returning and somewhat modified tropical air that will be wet coming in instead from the north west.

“We have had one of the warmest starts to November on record with very wet conditions and there is no prolonged cold spell on the horizon.

“It looks pretty average weather for this time of year if rather wet and at times still stormy”.

Mr Stevens said the cold snap will hit on Friday afternoon, as showers give way to colder air. The showers through the evening commute and into Friday night will turn to sleet and snow, with temperatures dropping to about 3°

“Friday night sees further sleet and snow showers with a band of heavier sleet to low ground and snow showers especially above 500 feet moving south late in the night. “This may well give a few centimetres of snow in places and bring the first whitening of the hills around Huddersfield.

“With this band of wintry weather strong NE gales may develop for a few hours gusting 50mph. It will be bitterly cold at around 0c.

“Saturday is very cold with plenty of sunshine and just an isolated snow shower. High 3c but feeling like -2c in the strong winds.

"The night brings the threat of some more sleet and snow showers in the west of Kirklees and temperatures as low as minus 3."
