A Huddersfield woman has won an award for her charity work.

Sophia Crawshaw raised more than £24,000 for One Good Turn, which she founded in 2011.

She has also recruited more than 30 volunteers and helped more than 600 families.

Sophia’s efforts are all the more impressive because she suffers from ME, a chronic and disabling health condition.

Her commitment, dedication and hard work have now been recognised by the local panel of the Halifax Giving Extra Awards.

“Sophia always puts others before herself and spends all her evenings and weekends running the charity,” says her sister Janet Cooke, who made the nomination.

“Many families would be suffering if she hadn’t set up One Good Turn, which works to tackle poverty and isolation by providing families and individuals with free furniture, white goods and clothes,” she adds.

Sophia is one of 67 local winners from across the UK, but she remains modest about her considerable achievements.

“I was initially a bit embarrassed, as the charity has been a team effort and I want to acknowledge my husband and the wonderful team,” she says. “I’m looking to launch in North Kirklees and I’d love to see a One Good Turn in every town that needs it,” she adds.

One Good Turn holds a coffee morning once a week in Huddersfield town centre, where members meet up for a coffee and a chat, take part in a raffle and collect the free items they need.
