A Huddersfield youngster has proved he’s at home with the fishes.

Jack Buxton has returned from Egypt after qualifying as a PADI Junior Open Water Scuba Diver and Junior Adventure Scuba Diver at the tender age of just 10 years and 4 months.

He is thought to be one of the youngest children in the world to claim this achievement.

The young scuba diver from Shelley, who is a pupil at Wooldale Junior School, didn’t just stop there.

Under the expert guidance of his instructor Garry Clarke, he has also achieved several speciality qualifications including Fish Identification, Boat Diver and Peak Performance Buoyancy.

In addition, as Jack was enjoying his diving so much, he also embarked on his first night dive. Although a little apprehensive at first and coming face to face with a 6ft Moray Eel shortly after his descent he returned back to Ocean Colleges dive boat with a smile beaming from ear to ear.

Proud parents Paul and Clare Buxton are also keen divers so the overall experience is very much a family affair.

Garry Clarke has also instructed Paul and Clare from Open Water, Advanced Open Water and various specialities through to Paul becoming a Dive Master and Clare a Master Scuba Diver.

The family’s love of diving started just 18 months ago when visiting Nad Lembeh in Indonesia, a world renowned dive resort owned by Paul’s brother Simon.

Jack has seen some amazing sights in his new adventure including Eagle Rays, Blue Spotted Sting Rays, Lionfish, Napolean Wrasse and turtles but was not fortunate enough to have his first shark encounter.

Clare said: “Jack is an absolute natural and has loved every minute of it.

“He did his first sessions in a pool only a few months ago and has progressed so quickly.

“As a family we have been diving for about 18 months and we have all progressed, but Jack is exceptional.

“We plan to go out to Malta to do more diving and through the summer, Jack will now be able to join us for dives at Capernwray in the Lake District. It’s not quite the same as Egypt but he can hone his skills.

“He is also hoping to gets some more training in so that he can dive to a depth of 21 metres, rather than the 12-metre limit he has at the moment”.
