A FAMOUS car with Huddersfield links is back on the big screen in the latest James Bond thriller.

The iconic Aston Martin DB5, voted the favourite Bond car of all time, is set to be the automotive highlight in the upcoming 007 movie Skyfall.

More than 1,000 of the DB5s were built by the company, which at the time was owned by Huddersfield tycoon Sir David Brown.

The tractor boss gave the range of sports car his own initials after he purchased the company in 1947.

The Lockwood company cut its ties with Aston Martin in 1972 but the DB initials are still used to this day.

The iconic Aston Martin DB5, first driven by Sean Connery in 1964 film Goldfinger, was adored by car enthusiasts for its timeless good looks and sheer elegance.

And it was loved by Bond fans for its ejection seat, twin machine guns, armour plating, rocket launchers and oil slick generators.

It makes its sixth appearance in the latest 007 flick after Bond requests a less modern vehicle for his mission.

“The problem with company cars is trackers,” he tells M as they drive to a faceless London lock-up.

The doors are opened and the classic British sports car is revealed.

“I suppose that’s completely inconspicuous,” she quips at Bond’s demand to go back in time.

Director of the 23rd Bond film, Sam Mendes, said: “The DB5 is part of my boyhood and it’s part of my generation’s boyhood.

“I had the toy and I had the ejector seat but I lost the little man that flew up and I spent the rest my childhood looking for it behind various sofas.”

Mendes said he had consciously referenced the 1960s classics in his 007 directorial debut.

“I felt it was a thematic thing,” he said, “something about the old and the new, and there’s something about the last part of the movie which deliberately could have taken place in 1962.”

Producer, Michael G Wilson, added: “We’ve used different cars from time to time but we always come back to Aston Martin.

“It’s a signature car for Bond and a classic one, his own personal one, it’s something the audiences love to see.”

The famous DB5 used in the movie was sold for £2.6m at auction in 2010.

Other Aston Martin models used in the James Bond film series are the Aston Martin DBS in Quantum of Solace and Aston Martin Vanquish in Die Another Day.

The new Aston Martin Vanquish also features in the October 26 release.

Exotic sports cars are not Huddersfield’s only link with James Bond.

Luxury cloth used for Daniel Craig’s suits has been provided by two local firms, Bower and Roebuck, of New Mill and Taylor and Lodge of Lockwood.
