It’s the end of the road for Huddersfield’s BHS store.

The two-storey department store at The Shambles closes at 5.30pm tonight (Wednesday) leaving 60 staff out of work.

In total, more than 11,000 BHS workers UK-wide are being made redundant as following the collapse of BHS in April.

Administrators from Duff & Phelps announced last month that all BHS stores are to shut by August 20 as part of a timetable for winding down the business.

The Huddersfield store was not included in the first wave of closures, which saw 50 stores shut over the past two weekends.

The store, which forms a key part of the Piazza Shopping Centre, employed 60 people before the closure programme was announced.

Duff & Phelps has failed to sell the business as a going concern and is looking to break it up piecemeal.

It is hoped that some stores in prime locations will transfer to new owners. Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley and Aziz Tayub, boss of Deighton-based Poundstretcher are understood to have made offers for some of the sites.

The loss of the Huddersfield store is a major blow to the town. BHS occupies the second-largest unit at the Piazza Shopping Centre – behind Boots – and accounts for about a fifth of total trading space at the centre.

Other tenants at the Piazza include Boots, Poundworld, WH Smith, Superdrug, Evans and Dorothy Perkins.

The BHS store, which included a restaurant, clothing and homeware departments and more recently as food court, is also one of the largest in the town centre, rivalling Marks & Spencer on New Street and House of Fraser at Kingsgate in terms of floorspace.

BHS has been selling off all its fixtures and fittings.
