The youngster hailed as Huddersfield’s bravest little boy has lost his battle with cancer.

And thousands of messages of condolence have been sent in after two-year-old Oliver Field lost his battle with a rare form of cancer.

His parents, Paul and Laura Field, and big brother Sam were with Oliver as he passed away yesterday morning.

They had taken the brave toddler back to their Dalton home the day before, after doctors said they could do no more.

In a statement the family said: “At 9:23am our beautiful, brave, funny, loving little boy took his last breath, with mummy, daddy and Sam cuddling him surrounded by his grandparents too, we told him we loved him and his great grandparents, his cat and the other brave nb (neuroblastoma) children who he’d know from the playroom would be waiting for him.”

Oliver had been fighting a rare and aggressive form of the cancer, neuroblastoma.

The Examiner reported yesterday how his parents were told Oliver may have just days left to live and took him home for one last time.

The toddler’s fight to stay alive has touched thousands of people across Huddersfield and further afield.

Little Oliver was diagnosed with the rare form of cancer, when he was just eight months old.

He has since has undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

In 2012 his parents launched the Oliver Field Appeal to raise money for costly cancer relapse treatment in either Germany or America.

Hundreds of people rallied around, organising coffee mornings, fun-days, supermarket bag-packing fundraisers and sponsored sporting challenges.

Community groups, sports teams and pubs also did their bit too to help little Oliver, raising more than £168,000.

And Oliver brought a smile to their faces too – when he was well Laura and Paul would take him to some of the events held to help raise treatment funds.

And big brother Sam, who was hospitalised with meningitis earlier this year, even did all he could to help his little brother. Sam, aged five, took part in charity fundraisers.

After his parents posted the heartbreaking news on Facebook more than 1,000 people posted messages of support and condolence to his family.

Among the comments were: Dawn Earnshaw: There will be a star in the sky tonight that shines brighter than all the rest. Look at it and think of Oliver the bravest little star when he was with you and the brightest now he’s gone. Sleep tight little man. xxx

Trish Cooper: Such sad news, rest in peace Oliver. Thoughts from the whole of Huddersfield & beyond are with your family at this sad time xx.
