Huddersfield’s “Angels of the Trains” have been traced.

The Good Samaritans who came to the aid of a grieving elderly couple caught up in a rail shutdown have been found, thanks to the Examiner.

And now the couple they helped, John and Kay Horsman, are planning a personal thank-you to the women.

The women were Martine Picano, Tracey Taylor and Alison Durham.

They were on their way back to Huddersfield after a weekend in Manchester celebrating Martine’s upcoming 40th birthday with other friends.

Mr and Mrs Horsman, who live in Consett, Co Durham, had been on holiday in Benidorm when they got the devastating news that their son Philip had collapsed and died.

Mr Horsman, 82, and his 76-year-old wife were unable to get a flight to Newcastle but managed to get seats on a plane to Manchester on Sunday morning.

But they landed at a time when signalling problems meant many trains out of Manchester and Huddersfield were cancelled or delayed and they faced a nightmare journey to get back to Durham.

The three women made sure they got seats on the right trains, carried their bags and arranged a taxi for the Huddersfield to Leeds leg. Martine even gave Mr Horsman £20 for the taxi fare.

The couple’s grandson Andrew Embleton said: “My grandparents are as good as can be expected. i don’t think it has hit them yet.

“We got details about the three people who helped them after the story appeared in the Examiner and on the website and my gran plans to call them all to say ‘Thanks’”.
