Huddersfield’s new cycle lane has been condemned as a “waste of money”

Dozens have voiced their opinions on the short stretch of cycle lane in Ramsden Street and High Street - and few are in favour.

The bright green lane has been put in place by Kirklees Council from Corporation Street to Albion Street and will see cyclists head uphill against the flow of traffic.

The council insists it is to help cyclists make the journey to Huddersfield Leisure Centre, some 250 yards away on the other side of the ring road.

But few support the idea.

Mark Sykes: There’s a crater on my road the size of jupiter but Huddersfield really needed bus gates and a cycle path going in the wrong direction on a one way street well done kirklees.

Karl Turrell: What is the point of a cycle lane there anyway cant say i see any bikes going round there anyway. It’s just another way to stop more people going into the town centre making it more of a ghost town.

Ricardo Vapour Peroni: So many cuts but so much money wasted. Serious kirklees council need to get a grip and put money where it’s needed. That cycle lane won’t work, isn’t needed and now proposes a danger to people crossing on a one way road with the added raised kerbs......ludicrous

Ryan Nind: Its a waste of tax payers money anyway spending more money on cycle lanes ect than on roads for cars yet they dont pay road tax how does that work?

Gary Quarmby: To be fair most of the stuff done in huddersfield is done without thought, as if someone needs to justify their job by coming up with rubbish ideas

Jen McCartney: The council in this town is a joke. They can’t afford to do important things that need doing such as pot holes etc yet they can spend an absolute fortune on doing these bus gates and cycle lanes that don’t need doing!

Paul Taylor: As usual, a waste of money as it is a one off connects to nothing. If it was part of a larger scheme giving cyclists a route through town I could understand it. Looks like as a disabled wheelchair user with partial sight it’s another obstacle to try & avoid!!

Amy Steel: Does anyone even cycle in the town centre anyway? Can’t remember the last time I saw a bicycle where they’ve put the cycle lane. Is it just me?

Nick Chadwick: So I’m presuming that the cost of the “Wrong Way” cycle lane was paid for by the “Cyclist’s Road Registration Fee” !

Kate Duckett: It’s fine. You cycle down on the road and cycle back up on the green lane. I for one will definitely be using it.
