There's a dramatic new look to the Huddersfield skyline.

Dozens of workers have ensured the town’s new Leisure Centre dominates the area.

And project managers have confirmed the £34m building scheme is now a quarter of the way through.

There has been rapid progress in recent days, with work starting on the roof of the main swimming pool area and the concrete terracing and seating gallery being hoisted into place.

All the groundwork on foundations and site clearance has long finished and workers have completed work on the room for the squash courts.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “The steel frame to the main pool area and the leisure pool is complete and the steel frame is now going up for the main entrance area.

“The first area of the lower ground floor has been cast and work on the second area is under way.

“A new access road into the car park is also in progress”.

Building work started on the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre in May 2013.

The new multi-million pound development is being built on the former site of Spring Grove car park in Springwood.

It will be owned by the council and managed by Kirklees Active Leisure.

The project is being handled by BAM Construction’s North East team and they have offered work on site to dozens of local employees, including 20 from Huddersfield.

The first of a series of on-site apprenticeships is about to begin.

The centre will be open to the public in 2015 and replace the existing Huddersfield Sports Centre, in Southgate.
