Members of the Polish community have celebrated their independence day.

November 11 is a national day of holiday in Poland to mark the country’s independence after 123 years of partitions by Austria, Hungary, Germany and Russia in 1918.

The Polish community of Kirklees hosted a special event, Proud to be Polish, in combination with Remembrance Sunday events.

The celebration at Huddersfield Methodist Mission featured presentations, song, dance and poetry and as part of the event, Polish young people organised the first screening of their new film ‘Proud to be Polish’.

The film has been made with backing from Kirklees Community Heritage Team and Lippy Films.

The Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Ken Smith, who attended the event, said it was worthy of being shown on national television.

Sofia Kubinska, who took part in making the film, said: “Having interviewed older people and the new generation of Polish people in Huddersfield we now understand how people feel, regardless of how they left Poland, whether it was after the war or a few years ago.

“We wanted to show our community and the wider community of Kirklees what it is to be young and Polish and to share more information about our culture.

“We believe this film will raise awareness of the Polish community and our role within the bigger community of Huddersfield.”

The event was attended by more than 250 people.
