CHOCOLATE eggs were being stripped from store shelves yesterday as shoppers prepared for the Easter weekend.

Most of the town’s stores will be closed for only one day over the holiday, but that didn’t stop hordes of customers storming the aisles and creating massive car park queues.

The Waterloo branch of Morrisons saw customers queuing for up to half an hour just to get out of the car park.

Worker Alan Sutcliffe said: “It’s been absolutely hectic, the customers are queuing for half an hour just to get out of the car park.

“It’s been like this all day and we’re only closed on Sunday!

“It’s been much busier than normal and I have no idea why – it’s similar to how busy it is at Christmas.”

Asda, based at Long Hill Road, reported an influx of customers queueing to get their hands on shopping essentials before their Easter getaways.

Samantha Bishop, from the store, said: “It’s been very busy, particularly this afternoon.

“People have been stocking up on the usual essentials like bread and milk and the Easter eggs have done pretty well too – there’s a few left but not a lot.

“People always panic buy when we are closed for one day – they stock up for when they go away.

“It’s always like this when we have bank holidays and we make sure we are prepared for them!”
