St George's Square was a riot of colour today as swathes of it were covered in bright yellow sunflowers.

The flowers appeared overnight in the square, which has a French-themed farm on it as part of the Tour de France Hypervelocity festival.

The farm itself appeared on overnight into Wednesday and commuters stepping out of the station yesterday morning got the shock of their lives when the paving was covered with crops, bushes, trees and even a cow!

Brought to Kirklees by the council and the Yorkshire Festival,  the farm known as Le Phun kicks off Hypervelocity – a free summer festival taking place across Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Holme.

Leader of Council, Cllr David Sheard said “When I heard about Le Phun coming to Huddersfield, I couldn’t wait to see how people would react as they came across the Square!

“Thanks to funding from the Yorkshire Festival, we’ve been able to celebrate the Grand Départ coming through our area with this humorous and unusual nod to France.

“Kirklees is renowned for being a creative centre, full of brilliantly artistic people and businesses. Our very own Festival of Light attracts thousands of people each year, but this is something quite different to anything we’ve done before.”
