A LARGE rubbish fire threatened to spread to a giant new warehouse.

A worried security guard alerted firefighters after heat from the blaze endangered the Poundstretcher building on Leeds Road, Deighton, at 11.30pm on Wednesday night.

Two Huddersfield crews tackled the fire on the former Hollidays Dyes And Chemicals site for 45 minutes.

A contractor used a forklift truck to shift three portable toilets that were also in danger of going up in flames.

He made a clear distance between several containers and small buildings and the fire.

Leading Firefighter Dave Chadwick, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "The fire was far too large to have been left unattended and was too near buildings.

"All kinds of rubbish was on fire, ranging from pallets to old paint tins and insulation. Anything that could burn had been thrown on it," he added.

"We would appeal to builders everywhere to make sure rubbish fires are small and well away from buildings, trees and bushes."
