Police are hunting a mum who may have just given birth after finding a human placenta.
The grim find was made by a dog-walker in a Batley park and detectives fear the mother who may recently have given birth is in need medical attention.
Kirklees CID made an urgent appeal for anyone with information.
The appeal came after a member of the public found a suspected human placenta near to Hyrstlands Park, off Track Road, Batley at around 9.40am this morning .
The organ was in a red and white drawstring CEX bag and was found by a dog walking with its owners.
On looking more closely at the bag, the owners saw its contents and immediately contacted emergency services.
Officers and Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics attended and following examination, medics determined the organ was a fully grown human placenta.
Searches have been ongoing in the area by specialist officers today and police are liaising with local hospitals and NHS services.
Det Sgt Adrian Belle, of Kirklees CID, said: “Extensive enquiries have been ongoing in the Track Road area and in wider Batley since the discovery of a placenta by a member of the public.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who can explain how the placenta came to be in this location.
“ We do know the placenta was from a baby which had progressed to full term and are of course anxious to trace both the mother and the child to check on their welfare.
“Both will need medical attention if that has not already been provided and that is our overriding concern”.
Det Sgt Belle added: “I really would like to stress to the mother that our main concern is to ensure you receive the medical help and support you or your child may need if you have not yet had it.
