A small village enjoyed big fun on Saturday.

Around 800 people of all ages turned out for the second annual Hopton Village Fete and Heritage Trail.

Dry – and occasionally – sunny weather brought out the crowds for traditional school games, arts and crafts, birds of prey, football target shooting and martial arts demonstrations.

The event, centred around the Sutcliffe Recreation Ground and Croft House in Upper Hopton, included a heritage trail demonstrating the village’s industries at the turn of the 20th century, such as mining, agriculture and malting barley for beer.

There was music from Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band and morris dancing from the Huddersfield White Rose Morris Men and Wakefield Morris Dancers.

Chairman of Upper Hopton Community Association, Roger Leedham, said: “We’ve tried to make it a family day.

“It’s not a boozy one – more tea and coffee! It’s family orientated and we do old fashioned things.

“The feedback we’ve had so far from people has been good.”

Enjoying the festivities was Tom Jagger, his partner Rebecca and their children Jacob, two, and two-week-old Oscar.

Tom, 38, from Ainley Top, said: “I think it’s great. The atmosphere and everything is great. My son liked the football games and the owls.”

Money raised at the event, compered by the Rev Hugh Baker, of St Mary’s Church, Mirfield, goes towards the upkeep of Croft House community centre.
