TWO men fled after they botched a robbery bid.

The men were spotted by two members of staff - a man and a woman - who were locking up Staincliffe Working Men's Club at 1.25am yesterday.

They saw two balaclava-clad men standing in the car park off Halifax Road in Staincliffe, Batley, and one was armed with a small axe.

The man, who had left the club, turned around to flee to safety and was struck on his back with the back of the axe.

The woman ran to a nearby petrol station to summon help.

The two masked men ran away into fields.

Both are about 5ft 10ins tall, stocky and wore dark clothes.

Both victims were left shocked, but no cash was stolen.
