AN ICY blast hit Huddersfield - 14 days after the start of spring.

Drivers faced thick layers of snow and ice on their cars as temperatures plummeted to -3ºC overnight.

But there were no problems on the roads as Kirklees Council had sent gritters out over the weekend. The snow and hail came less than a week before the start of Huddersfield's new cricket season.

Unseasonably heavy snow fell overnight in the South.

Up to two inches fell across parts of Kent, East Sussex and West Sussex overnight and there were reports of some snow settling in south-east London.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning early today, predicting heavy snow for southern England, especially Brighton and Hove.

But the cold snap is not expected to last.

Temperatures are forecast to become warmer across the country, not dropping below 3ºC (37.4ºF) in Huddersfield.
