Another day, another scoop for the Examiner.

Except this one was pistachio-flavoured, drizzled in chocolate and came with a wafer.

Bradford chain Icestone Gelato brought its colourful displays of desserts to Huddersfield on Friday, as it opened its doors with the promise of free ice cream to the first 250 customers.

The branch on John William Street, where hair salon Toni and Guy used to be, is the chain’s fifth.

But fresh for the Huddersfield opening, Icestone have created two new flavours of gelato as well as new recipes for cakes.

Salted caramel, and the slightly bizarre Red Bull, were the two new flavours on offer to celebrate the new branch.

The shop gave out cards to the first 250 customers entitling them to a free scoop every day for the rest of the month, which disappeared within the first hour of business.

Operations director Paul Morris said: “We put everything into what we do, we’ve even visited Italy to learn about gelato.

“We have been working 15-hour shifts for the past five days to make the opening a success.

The new branch will create 25 jobs, but Paul said they were looking to push that up to 30.

Paul, who is running the branch with wife and manager Kully, added: “I think it’s a great and vibrant place to sit and hang out with friends and family.”

A group that were doing just that were Greenhead College students Leah Barker-Davis and her friends.

The 18-year-olds had all come to the opening to celebrate finishing their English Literature A-level exam.

Louisa Mansaf, one of the group said: “It brings fun to the town centre, I like how modern and colourful it is.”
