A grand design has been unveiled for the Sheepridge estate.

Developers want to demolish an off-licence and post office in Sheepridge Road – and build an impressive new store complete with digital clock.

Mahmood Choudhury is seeking planning permission for a new off-licence and apartments.

Designs by Barkisland firm Jade3 Architecture show an eco-friendly new build with a clock tower.

The plans will mean demolition of the old store with a bigger replacement spreading onto adjacent wasteland.

Mr Choudhury’s application says the existing store is not big enough and he wants to help regenerate the area.

He says the “grand vision is to create a flagship building for the village” which “complements local nearby shops and facilities.”

He adds: “Currently there is a small off-licence store with a Post Office and external ATM, with one apartment over.

“The existing building does not comply with Disability Discrimination Act requirements with steps internally. It also has structural issues and would be more expensive to refurbish and extend.

“It is better to knock down the existing building and start afresh.”

The development will be phased so the current off-licence can continue trading while the new one is built. Six new jobs could be created.

The application is open to public comments via Kirklees Council’s website until June 2.
