JOBS at the Index store in Huddersfield are safe.

Catalogue retailer Argos said that the Index store at Victoria Lane would continue to trade - safeguarding 24 jobs.

The store is one of 33 Index outlets bought by Argos from rival retailer Littlewoods in a £44m deal. The store will continue to trade under the Index name until the transaction is completed, which is expected to be in July.

After that, the store will be rebranded as an Argos store.

Argos said it would be retaining its existing Argos outlets in Huddersfield - at the Pack Horse Centre and the Leeds Road Retail Park.

Sara Weller, Argos managing director, said: "It's great news for the town."

She said Index staff would undergo training before the relaunch of the store. In total, about 800 people will transfer to Argos with the 33 acquired stores.

The stores comprise 29 high street outlets and four on retail parks.

Liverpool-based Littlewoods plans to close 126 Index stores with the loss of more than 3,000 jobs. Shopworkers' union Usdaw has demanded an explanation for the decision by Littlewoods to close or sell every Index store in the country.
