An inquest into the death of a new-born baby just days after his mum was turned away from hospital has recorded a misadventure verdict.

Gino Asquith died at just three days old after his mother was left waiting for six hours on a busy maternity ward despite telling staff she couldn’t feel the baby moving.

Bradford Coroner’s Court heard how Gino’s mum, 28-year-old Sarah Ellis from Batley, went into labour on November 7, 2014.

She attended Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax where she was told there was no bed for her and that she needed to go to Huddersfield Birthing Centre.

Because her labour was not in an advanced stage she was sent home but later that day she could no longer feel her baby moving and attended Calderdale hospital again where she was admitted to the Maternity Assessment Unit.

Six hours later she was examined by a consultant and underwent an emergency Caesarean section.

Gino was born on November 9 and was resuscitated twice. He was placed on a life support machine but just days later Sarah and her partner Adam Asquith were advised to withdraw treatment and Gino died on November 12.

West Yorkshire coroner Oliver Longstaff said there were several missed opportunities to get medical intervention for Gino’s mother by staff at Calderdale Royal Hospital.

But he said that steps had been taken at the hospital since to prevent this happening again.

Mr Longstaff described Gino’s death as a tragedy and said his parents had been very dignified throughout the two day inquest.
