A INQUEST will tomorrow be expected to reveal harrowing details of the moment a Huddersfield army bomb disposal expert was fatally injured in an explosion.

Capt Lisa Jade Head was caught in a blast while trying to defuse an improvised explosive device in the Helmand province of Afghanistan almost a year ago.

Minutes earlier she had defused another bomb left in an alleyway that was designed to kill or maim Allied troops.

An inquest in Bradford will tomorrow hear evidence about the tragedy.

Capt Head, 29, of Almondbury, suffered severe multiple injuries and died on April 19, 2011, hours after being flown to a hospital in Birmingham.

She had been on the frontline of the bitter conflict for little over three weeks.

She was serving with 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, the Royal Logistic Corps, who have tragically lost six members in the Afghan conflict.

She was working with a patrol of paratroopers in Nahr-e-Saraj, Helmand Province when the device went off.

Capt Head was the second female British soldier to be killed in Afghanistan.

The first was Sarah Bryant, a 26-year-old member of the Intelligence Corps who died along with three SAS men in a roadside bomb attack in Lashkar Gah.

Capt Head’s funeral was held last May at St Peter’s Church, Huddersfield.

Her family said at the time: “We wish to say that we are extremely proud of Lisa.

“Lisa always said that she had the best job in the world and she loved every second of it.

“Lisa had two families – us and the Army.

“Lisa had a fantastic life and lived it to the full.

“No-one was more loved.”

“She will, justly, be remembered among the ranks of the bravest of the brave.”

At her funeral her commanding officer, Lt Col Adam McRae MBE, told mourners Capt Head had been knocked off her feet by one blast from a roadside bomb, but “dusted herself down” and carried on trying to nullify the threat.

“It was an act of breathless bravery, and sadly one that cost her her life,’’ he said.

Capt Head was educated at Greenside Infants, Almondbury Junior School and Almondbury High School.

She then studied at Greenhead College and at the University of Huddersfield, where she gained a 2:1 degree in human biology before enrolling at Sandhurst.

She served in Northern Ireland and also previously in Afghanistan before her final tour.
