An inquest has been opened on suspected Taser death man Adrian McDonald.

And it has been revealed that five police officers have been warned their conduct is to be investigated.

All were involved on the night Mr McDonald, of Huddersfield, was arrested after being shot with a Taser.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission’s (IPCC) investigation into police actions prior to the death of Mr McDonald in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, in December last year is progressing.

The inquest was opened and adjourned at Stoke-on-Trent Coroner’s Court.

IPCC investigators have gathered evidence including accounts from officers and witnesses, and viewed footage from officers’ body worn video cameras. Tests have been conducted on the Taser discharged in the incident.

An IPCC spokesman said: “It has been established that, while officers attending the incident were responding to a 999 call made by a member of the public indicating a man had broken into the flat in Audley Road, Mr McDonald was in fact a guest there.

“He had attended the address earlier in the evening for a party. Staffordshire Police were not aware of this information at the time of the arrest.

“Notices have been served on five Staffordshire Police officers who were involved in the incident advising them that their conduct is subject to the IPCC investigation."

The IPCC has met with Mr McDonald’s family to explain progress in the investigation and are keeping HM Coroner and Staffordshire Police informed.

Mr McDonald died after being arrested by Staffordshire Police officers at the address in Newcastle-under-Lyme during the early hours of December 22, 2014.

He was brought up in Dalton, Huddersfield, where his family still live, and had been living in Stoke for about a year.

Earlier reports from a friend of Mr McDonald said he had been invited to a party. Paul Carter contacted police after Adrian McDonald became agitated during a party at his Chesterton flat.

He says Adrian, who lived in Stoke-on-Trent, was invited to his home for birthday drinks on Sunday night.

But it appears other 999 calls were made to police, including one from a neighbour reporting a burglary at the property.
