A BIG investigation into fly-tipping at Scammonden has been launched by the Environment Agency and Kirklees Council.

And the two organisations are appealing to members of the public for information about the incidents.

About 500 tyres, a number of barrels of general waste, and car parts were dumped on the B6114 Saddleworth Road at Scammonden on January 25.

A further 850 tyres were fly-tipped near the A640 New Hey Road this week.

The tyres were spread over a long stretch of road and may have been thrown from a moving vehicle.

The Agency is now working with Kirklees Council to catch the culprits.

Louise Jackson, an Agency officer said: "These are serious incidents and the Environment Agency has started an investigation in order to trace those responsible.

"Where appropriate we will seek to prosecute.

"Fly-tipping incidents such as these threaten public health and quality of life. Tyres are extremely flammable and can pollute the air, water and ground if burned without proper controls.

"The dumping of these tyres shows a blatant disregard of the regulations. This year it has cost Kirklees Council about £5,000 to remove them from this hot spot."

Ms Jackson said it was suspected that a tyre collection service was behind the tipping.

"We suspect that someone is operating a tyre collection service and picking the waste up from local garages - perhaps in the local area.

"They are probably charging for the service and instead of disposing of the tyres in a legitimate route they are dumping them up at Scammonden.

"The motor trade has a legal duty of care to ensure that the used tyres it produces or handles are properly disposed of through licensed waste handlers."
