A 20-year-old student has reported being raped at a town centre nightclub.

The female student said she was raped on Sunday evening or the early hours of this morning.

Police say the incident occurred in a unisex toilet at Tokyo's, a nightclub in the Old Courthouse on Queen Street in Huddersfield town centre.

The Examiner understands she was forced into a cubicle and raped.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The victim is being supported by specially trained officers and the area has been sealed off for forensic examination.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Huddersfield CID via: 101 or by calling Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on: 0800 555 111."

Adele Lord, Tokyo's area manager and designated premises supervisor, said:

"Student safety is paramount and everyone here is absolutely devastated at this allegation.

"We just hope that the lady is OK and send our best wishes to her.

"We have operated a unisex toilet policy here since we opened seven years ago and have full CCTV in there.

"We have provided the police with that coverage this morning and have always had a fantastic relationship with West Yorkshire Police.

"We also have a lady or gentleman in the toilets at all times monitoring the situation.

"They have a radio on them and can contact door staff immediately if required.

"Every assistance is being given to Huddersfield CID. Tokyo's is the official nightclub venue of Huddersfield University and we have dedicated student events every Wednesday night."

The club opens from 11pm on a Sunday and shuts around 3.30am on Mondays.
