GAMERS had their skills put to the test for a national TV show.

The design team at website developers Running in the Halls in Huddersfield were challenged by Channel 5’s Gadget Show to create an online game to go head-to-head with another company’s gaming creation.

The digital experts rose to the challenge and their game Mech-Fu, a robot ninja fighting game, is now available to view online.

The team, led by Iman Moradi, Alison Mealey and Sam Croft, relied on the skills of Huddersfield University student Joe Sharpe.

Joe is doing his placement year at the Bates Mill company and will soon see his artwork and animation broadcast to millions on the TV show.

Alison Mealey said: “Joe created the animation and did so much work in such a short amount of time.

“It’s very impressive and a great thing to have done in a placement year.”

The Running in the Halls (RITH) team were approached by the Gadget Show in January and had less than a month to complete the challenge. Usually they would expect to work on such a project for up to six months.

Gadget Show presenters Jason Bradbury and Suzi Perry have got a team to create a game for them which will appear online and be broadcast next month.

The RITH team are being backed by Jason Bradbury, a children’s author and show presenter. Their rival’s game, about helicopter golf, was created by a company which specialises in making games for TV shows.

Iman Moradi, creative director of the company said: “We were very excited as it means a massive amount of exposure for our company and we said ‘yes’, despite the odds against us – needless to say we did it in record time.”

Dr Matthew Adkins, senior lecturer, at Huddersfield University and Rose Dodd, a research associate, from the university’s School of Music, worked on the game’s music and sound effects.

RITH was formed after the trio of Sam, Alison and Iman left Huddersfield University in 2009.

They have been working on iphone and ipad apps and working with companies from Huddersfield to New York.
