LESSONS with a difference are set to take Huddersfield schools by storm.

A Huddersfield theatre group will teach young people about science, maths and technology subjects - not in a classroom but inside inflatable pods.

The Chol Theatre – based at the Lawrence Batley Theatre on Queen Street – has won a contract to create a new learning show for children and young people, touring schools across the region.

The show, which studies the subjects in relation to space exploration, has just started and runs to the end of the academic year.

Susan Burns, co-director of the Chol Theatre, said the show combined science fact and fiction, set in three inflatable pods.

She added: “Each space pod contains an interactive console and an actor in a fascinating, futuristic dilemma.”

Ms Burns said the show was highly colourful, funny, imaginative and interactive.

She added: “The show looks at what life might be like on a lunar hotel, in Spaceship Diversity, and on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.”

The Chol Theatre was commissioned by Setpoint, a Bradford-based company which supports the development of science technology in schools, to create the show.

Joint co-director Andrew Loretto said he hopes the show will be a success.

He added: “It is a very innovative, design-led idea.

“We’ve got artists who have helped design the pods.

“They are made to stimulate people with a mixture of science fact and science fiction.”

Students from Spen Valley High School at Liversedge have also been involved with the show’s production.

The Yorkshire Forward economic development agency provided money for the project.
